Pap smears are purely a screen for cervical cancer. It is possible to see evidence of HPV (the wart virus that causes cervical cancer) and trichomonas (a single celled parasite that causes a sexually transmittable disease). However, a Pap smear is NOT a test designed to detect STDs; it cannot detect herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, or hepatitis B or C, and is not definitive for trichomonas.
